Pete Alonsos Big Night Propels Mets To Victory

Pete Alonso's Big Night Propels Mets to Victory

Alonso's Clutch Hit Gives Mets Key Division Win

In a crucial NL East showdown, Pete Alonso's solo homer in the eighth inning proved to be the difference-maker as the New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 3-2 on Tuesday night at Citi Field.

With the game tied 2-2 and two outs in the eighth, Alonso stepped up to the plate against Phillies reliever Sam Coonrod. On a 1-1 count, Alonso launched a 93 mph sinker over the left-field wall for his 13th home run of the season and second of the series.

Mets' Bullpen Shines in Tight Contest

Despite the Mets' shaky start, their bullpen came through in a big way. After starter Chris Bassitt allowed two runs on five hits over 4 1/3 innings, the Mets' relievers combined to allow just one hit over the final 4 2/3 innings.

Trevor May, Seth Lugo, and Edwin Díaz were all impressive out of the pen, with Díaz striking out the side in the ninth inning to earn his sixth save of the season.

Phillies Fall Behind in NL East Race

The loss drops the Phillies to 18-21 on the season and six games behind the first-place Mets in the NL East. The Phillies' offense struggled to keep up with the Mets all night, as they managed just six hits and struck out 10 times.

Bryce Harper was the lone bright spot for the Phillies, going 2-for-4 with a double. However, he was stranded on base five times, including twice in scoring position.

Mets Stay Hot, Extend Winning Streak

The Mets, meanwhile, have now won four straight games and improved to 24-15 on the season. They hold a 3.5-game lead over the second-place Atlanta Braves in the NL East.

Alonso has been a key part of the Mets' success this season, as he leads the team in home runs and RBIs. His clutch hit on Tuesday night was just the latest example of his importance to the team.
