New York Mets' Eddy Alvarez to Miss Remainder of 2023 Season After Tearing ACL

Mets' Utility Man Suffers Season-Ending Injury in Spring Training

Outfielder Eddy Alvarez will miss the entire 2023 season after tearing his ACL during a spring training game against the Boston Red Sox.

The Mets confirmed the news in a statement, saying that Alvarez underwent successful surgery to repair the ligament in his right knee.

Alvarez, who was competing for a spot on the Opening Day roster, was injured while attempting to field a ball in the outfield.

The 32-year-old utility man is expected to make a full recovery, but he will not be able to return to the field this season.

Alvarez's injury is a blow to the Mets, who were counting on him to provide depth in the outfield and at second base.

The Mets have not yet announced who will take Alvarez's place on the roster, but they are expected to make a move before the start of the regular season.

Alvarez had been impressive in spring training, batting .333 with two home runs and five RBIs in 15 games.

He was also a key member of the Mets' outfield defense, playing both center field and right field.

Alvarez's absence will likely open the door for another player to earn a spot on the Mets' Opening Day roster.

Among the candidates to replace Alvarez are outfielders Brandon Nimmo, Starling Marte, and Mark Canha.

The Mets are scheduled to open the regular season on March 30 against the Miami Marlins at Citi Field.
